Seared Cod & Shrimp

with Lemon Garlic Yogurt Cream Sauce

This dish feels rich and restaurant-worthy while still fitting the Midlife Wellness & Beyond approach. The cod provides tender, flaky lean protein, the shrimp add texture and natural sweetness, and the lemon garlic yogurt sauce delivers plenty of comfort without turning dinner into a bowl of heavy cream.

MW&B recipes are built around real ingredients, meaningful protein, plants where possible, healthy fats, fiber when appropriate, and enough flavor to make eating well feel sustainable rather than grim.MW&B recipes are built around real ingredients, meaningful protein, plants where possible, healthy fats, fiber when appropriate, and enough flavor to make eating well feel sustainable rather than grim.

Serves: 4
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

For the seafood

  • 1 pound cod fillets, cut into 2-3 inch pieces
  • ½ pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

For the lemon garlic yogurt cream sauce

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small shallot, finely minced
  • ½ cup low-sodium seafood, chicken, or vegetable broth
  • ¼ cup dry white wine or additional broth
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons half-and-half or light cream, optional
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional finish

  • Extra parsley
  • Lemon wedges
  • A small drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
  • Pinch of smoked paprika

Method

1. Dry the seafood.
Pat the cod and shrimp very dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture helps the cod develop color instead of steaming in the pan.

2. Season.
Season the cod and shrimp with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and lemon zest.

3. Sear the cod.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cod in a single layer, leaving space between the pieces.

Cook for approximately 3 to 4 minutes on the first side. Carefully turn the cod and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, depending on its thickness, until golden and just cooked through. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

Avoid repeatedly moving or turning the cod. It is delicate and will break apart when subjected to unnecessary movement.

4. Cook the shrimp.
Add the shrimp to the same skillet and cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side, until pink, opaque, and just cooked through. Transfer to the plate with the cod.

5. Start the sauce.
Reduce the heat to medium. Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, followed by the shallot and garlic. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant and softened.

6. Deglaze the pan.
Add the broth and white wine or additional broth. Scrape the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.

7. Make it creamy.
Reduce the heat to low. Whisk in the Dijon mustard, Greek yogurt, optional half-and-half, lemon juice, lemon zest, parsley, thyme, and black pepper.

Keep the heat low and do not allow the sauce to boil, as high heat can cause the yogurt to separate.

8. Return the seafood.
Gently return the cod and shrimp to the skillet. Spoon the sauce over the seafood and warm for approximately 1 minute. Avoid stirring aggressively so the cod remains in intact pieces.

9. Serve.
Finish with extra parsley, lemon wedges, a light drizzle of olive oil, or a pinch of smoked paprika.

MW&B: Why This Fits

Real Food First
Cod, shrimp, Greek yogurt, garlic, shallot, lemon, herbs, olive oil, and simple seasonings form the foundation of the recipe.

Build and Keep Muscle
Cod and shrimp provide lean, high-quality protein that supports muscle maintenance, recovery, and satiety during midlife.

Healthy Fats
Extra virgin olive oil adds flavor and satisfaction without making butter or heavy cream the foundation of the sauce.

Flavor Without Added Sugar
Lemon, garlic, Dijon mustard, herbs, smoked paprika, and the browned pan juices create a bright, savory sauce without added sugar.

Comfort with Balance
Greek yogurt creates a creamy texture while contributing additional protein and keeping the sauce lighter than a traditional cream-based version.

Flavor Is Compliance
Golden cod, tender shrimp, fresh herbs, lemon, garlic, and a creamy pan sauce.
